severely damaged by the accidental release of a biologically engineered lubricant
called LOTUS 54. The artificially created contaminant moved rapidly through the fragile ecosystem. For 35 miles
into the nearby farmland, and 550 miles down river from its release point, it
left a wake
of poisoned wildlife and dying foliage. Rain carried traces of the
chemical to
the sea and decimated dozens of species.
